The capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., is often thought of simply as the seat of the Federal Government and not a place for museums. All three branches of the government are located in the city, as are foreign embassies, the headquarters of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States and several others. The headquarters of many organizations and institutions that deal extensively with the federal government are also located in Washington, D.C. So are many of the country's most famous museums and historic sites.
