Most pool owners in North Texas (or similar climates) do not winterize their swimming pools. So when the air temperature hits the freezing point it's important that your pool is circulating the water. Pool water circulation alone will keep the pool water from freezing in most winter conditions in climates like North Texas.

Here are three precautions to help you avoid any swimming pool freeze damage in climates in Plant Hardiness Zone 8a-9b (average annual minimum temperatures). Example Dallas, Texas is in Plant Hardiness Zone 8a with average annual minimum temperature 10 to 15 Fahrenheit.
Pool Freeze Guard
Make sure you have a pool freeze guard installed and working properly. This is a simple thermostat with a switch that will override the pool pump timer and turn it on when the air temperature reaches the freezing point.
It's important to set your freeze guard to turn on the equipment a few degrees higher than 32 degrees Fahrenheit because most freeze guards are only accurate to within 3-5 degrees of the actual air temperature.
Pool Equipment
Make sure all pool equipment is working properly. To test your system turn the freeze guard on and check the operation of your system and verify proper operation of all equipment and water circulation.
Pool Cleaning
Don’t neglect your pool in the winter. Make sure to keep your pool skimmer baskets and pump baskets clean by empting these often during the winter months or hire a pool service in Dallas or in your area to help maintain your pool. If your pool baskets contain leaves and debris the water circulation can be hindered to the point where you get swimming pool freeze damage to the pool itself or the pool equipment. So take these precautions and avoid swimming pool freeze damage.
